Brenda Nyhof

I began working with paper Mache around 2015. I was searching for a school project and remembered a guy Dan Reeder, from years ago who published a book on Paper Mache monsters. ( My mother and myself had made a few of these creations when I was in my 20’s) I looked him up online and saw he had moved into dragons. After working on the school project, I became fascinated in making dragons, masks and monsters and, of course made about a million of them!

‘Silas the Stupendous’ Paper Mache 2018

Paper Mache works including ‘Bird Woman’ and a drawing around 2020

I made some human-sized pieces then moved into smaller works with ‘riders’ that began my exploration with air-dry and polymer clays as I wanted to get smaller and more elegant.

‘Cat burglar’ Paper Mache 2021

‘Wee gothic guy’ Paper Mache 2019

I moved into making wall-hung masks and smaller pieces.

I developed an interest in photographing my sculptures in different environments, which is still something I’m playing with.
